According to a recent study published by Moving Waldo, Rancho Santa Margarita took the number one spot as the safest city in California.

The study, titled Top 10 Safest Cities in California With Best Quality of Life 2023, was released in January. The ranking of cities was based on three criteria: violent-crime rate, property crime rate, and total crime rate. It cites statistics that come from the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR Program) and Neighborhood Scouts. According to the FBI, The UCR Program "includes data from more than 18,000 city, university and college, county, state, tribal, and federal law enforcement agencies. Agencies participate voluntarily and submit their crime data through a state UCR program or the FBI's UCR Program."

The study said that Rancho Santa Margarita clinched the top spot thanks to its violent and property crime rate of 1.32 per 1,000, significantly lower than California's average rate for violent and property crimes, along with its excellent quality of life.

    BUSINESS WATCH

Backflow Valves are a critical part of any plumbing system and come in many shapes and sizes. Larger properties such as commercial buildings require the use of larger backflow valves. These valves are made of metal that can be recycled for money, which makes them an attractive target for theft.

There have been several recent incidents of backflow valve thefts occurring in the Orange County area. These thefts typically occur overnight or on the weekends when businesses are closed. Thieves can cut the valves from the system in a matter of minutes and cause expensive damage in the process. These thefts can also severely impact operations for businesses.

You can help prevent the theft of backflow valves by installing commercially available cages or locking devices to make accessing these devices more difficult for criminals. We encourage commercial property owners and tenants to discuss this topic and explore theft prevention strategies. Also, remember to immediately call OC Sheriff Dispatch to report any suspicious activity.

Please contact the RSM Police Services Crime Prevention Unit for additional information on how to better protect your business. RSMcrimeprevention@ocsheriff.gov.
